At Great Western Medical, we provide comprehensive skin care — from skin cancer checks, biopsies, and removal of lesions confirmed or suspicious for cancer, to the treatment of benign (harmless) lesions such as skin tags, cysts, and cosmetic moles.


Bulk‑Billed Skin Cancer Checks

We provide complete skin cancer care, including:

  • Skin cancer checks (bulk billed)
  • Biopsies
  • Skin cancer surgery
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Treatment of painful, bleeding, ulcerated, or changing lesions
  • Bulk‑billed ingrown toenail procedures (when medically indicated)


If Medicare assigns an MBS item number, your procedure is fully bulk-billed.

 

Why Medicare Does Not Cover Some Procedures

Medicare rebates apply only to procedures that are medically necessary.


A procedure is considered cosmetic when it is performed to improve appearance rather than to treat a medical problem. Cosmetic procedures do not have an MBS item number and therefore cannot be bulk billed.


Procedures Medicare Does Cover

(These are bulk billed at our clinic)

  • Removal of lesions confirmed or suspicious for cancer
  • Biopsies for diagnosis
  • Treatment of lesions that bleed, ulcerate, or cause pain
  • Removal of lesions interfering with daily activities
  • Cryotherapy for medically indicated lesions (e.g., actinic keratoses, viral warts)


If a procedure has an MBS item number, you will not be charged.


Procedures Medicare Does Not Cover

(These attract a private fee)

  • Skin tag removal for appearance
  • Removal of benign moles that are not suspicious
  • Cosmetic removal of seborrheic keratoses (“age spots”)
  • Cosmetic cyst removal (not infected or symptomatic)
  • Cosmetic angioma removal
  • Cryotherapy for cosmetic lesions


These procedures are considered cosmetic because they do not pose a medical risk.

 

Fees for Procedures Not Covered by Medicare

(Non‑MBS procedures only)

  • Skin tag removal (1–5): $85
  • Additional tags: $15 each
  • Cosmetic mole removal: $185
  • Seborrheic keratosis removal: $105
  • Angioma removal: $115
  • Cyst excision: $200
  • Cyst drainage: $90
  • Cryotherapy (1–3 cosmetic lesions): $60
  • Additional lesions: $15 each
  • Minor scar revision: $275
  • Medium scar revision: $425


All fees include consumables, sterile equipment, and dressings.
